INSPIR ATION, NOT APPLICATION

The Old Testament is great for inspiration, but not application. Don’t do anything the Old Testament tells you to do because someone in the Old Testament tells you to do it or because they did it themselves. Especially the because they did it themselves part. That could get you arrested. This is such a big idea I’ve devoted the entire next section to it. But life is uncertain and I wasn’t sure you would make it to the next section. So there you go.

While the Old Testament is not our go-to source for application, it is a fabulous source of inspiration. Old Testament narratives are rich in courage, valor, and sacrifice. Everybody faces a Goliath or two. Most of us can relate to Moses’ fear of rejection and Gideon’s insecurity regarding his past. Who isn’t inspired by Joseph’s decision to forgive his wicked brothers or Daniel’s decision to face Babylonian lions rather than violate his conscience. Besides, Old Testament stories of faith, fortitude, and grit are the dots that connect to create the storyline of our redemption. While it’s not your covenant, it certainly connects to your story. Referencing the saga of ancient Israel, Paul places it in its proper new covenant context when he writes:

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.7
